BP Agrees to Pay $175 Million to Investors Over Deepwater Risks

LonDON -- BP PLC has agreed to pay investors $175 million to settle a lawsuit over its disclosure of business risks related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon blowout, the company said late Thursday.
The disaster, which killed 11 workers, has already forced BP to set aside more than $56 billion to cover cleanup and legal costs.
Thursday's settlement is with investors who purchased BP's U.S.-listed shares in the aftermath of the rig explosion. They claimed BP misled them about the extent of the spill. The investors sued the company in Houston federal court for the losses they suffered as oil seeped into the Gulf and BP shares plummeted.
The class-action complaint was scheduled to go to trial next month, and the settlement is still subject to approval by a Houston federal court judge. The $175 million settlement will be paid over 2016 and 2017, the company said.
